Captain's Welcome Message

A very warm welcome to Lingdale Golf Club.

Welcome to you all from Ladies’ Captain Sharon Scott and myself. As we embark upon another year at Lingdale Golf Club, it is a great honour for us to represent the club and you, the members in 2024. We also look forward to carrying on the positive work of previous Captains.

Last year’s Captains, John and Heather, enjoyed a very successful 2023. Congratulations and many thanks to them both.

We have another full year of golfing and social events planned and Sharon and I look forward to seeing and meeting you at some point during the year.

Lingdale continues to provide excellent golf with a great course, wonderful setting, dedicated and committed staff both on and off the course and a very friendly management team and membership. These couple of points are heard time and again as reasons why new members join and why we retain existing ones.

In 2023 we have not been without challenge as climate change appears to be providing more difficult conditions at times during the year and we, along with many clubs, have regrettably had to close when playing conditions have become dangerous and unplayable due to unseasonably significant rainfall. The Management Committee and Greens Staff are very aware of the situation and will endeavour to keep closures to a minimum whilst protecting the course from damage which would impact on the main playing season, and also at the same time, members from possible injury.

In recent years we have made significant improvements and investment at the Club, we’ve upgraded the drive and car park, built a new buggy shed, installed winter tees, upgraded the changing rooms and lockers, put a wind deflector screen around the patio and extended it, added a covered patio area and started a pathway upgrade program, some of these improvements with generous donations from members to whom we are very grateful. Thank you to you all. Now we aim to build an additional greens equipment shed which is a real must and look at improving the bunkers.

We hope that you will again take part in our club competitions and opens, bring along your friends and enjoy the many social events we have planned. Keep an eye open for Captains v Vice Captains, my Captain’s Day and Sharons Lady Captain’s Day. My Captain’s Away Day will be at Walmley Golf Club, Sutton Coldfield, where you should anticipate a great day’s golf and enjoyable meal afterwards.

We can again anticipate our usual calendar of competitions at all levels, including our juniors, in house, within the county and nationally and hopefully you will continue to make yourselves available for the teams and take part wherever you can, continuing our successes from previous years. Congratulations to all of our winners.

Our chosen charity for 2024 is Cancer Research UK. Many of us, Sharon and I included, have already been affected by cancer as will 1 in 2 of us during our lives. It is a disease with many forms and Cancer Research UK continue to invest in researching ways to cure and mitigate the effects of what can be a soul-destroying experience. We will be holding various funds raising activities alongside our golfing and social calendars during the year and hope for your support. A large number of Lingdale ladies are taking part in a “pretty muddy” event and would love to be joined or sponsored by as many Lingdale members as possible.

Of course, none of this will be possible without the great support we receive from the Office, Pro Shop, Catering and Greens teams, as well as our Vice-Captains, Jonathan (Jay) Rennocks and Sue Godfrey. Many thanks to them all.

Sharon and I look forward to seeing you all on the course or in the clubhouse, supporting teams and enjoying events throughout the year. Wishing you and your families, a happy, healthy and successful 2024.
